Discover Gabriola Island
Welcome to Gabriola Island!
Gabriola Island, neighbouring Nanaimo 5 km (3 mi) to the east, is similar to many of the Gulf Islands in that it embraces a strong creative community. Nature has proven to be one of the island—s best contributing artists, having created the Malaspina Gallery masterpiece. This 70-m (229-ft) long, 4-m (13-ft) high sandstone sea cave has been carved out by frost and surf. Dating back to the Ice Age, the Malaspina Gallery is a work in progress as the erosion continues. Other aged artworks include the petroglyphs left by First Nations people. Over 50 of these rock carvings can be found on the island, the most famous being a depiction of a killer whale near Degnen Bay. Those not artistically inclined can exercise their talents in a number of Gabriola Island activities. Diving around marine life such as Pacific octopi and eels, golfing at the Gabriola Island Golf & Country Club or digging fresh clams to feast on can be participated in by both the skilled and the novice.
